Delegation from the Bahamas Visits OUC

Ocean University of China (OUC) was pleased to receive the visit of a delegation from the Bahamas on Nov.17, 2015, at the Laoshan campus. They were welcomed by President Yu Zhigang and Vice President Li Huajun.

The purpose of the delegation’s Qingdao visit was to discuss the materialization of a collaboration agreement signed by Ocean University of China (OUC) and Bahamas Agricultural and Marine Sciences Institute (BAMSI), and to exchange views for further cooperation.

In his welcoming speech, President Yu had a brief review of the visit of an OUC delegation to the Bahamas in July of this year and the agreement signed by both sides. He said that the reciprocal visits have promoted a more holistic and deeper understanding between the two institutions which will effectively enhance future communication and cooperation.

“There is a big potential for the collaboration of both sides in the areas of aquaculture, the processing of marine products, and the utilization of biological resources. With the deepening of such cooperation, both sides will have room to expand their collaboration in the areas of oceanographic and environmental sciences,” said President Yu, adding that OUC is fully supportive of the cooperation and exchanges of both sides and will actively implement the agreement in an effort to achieve effective cooperation.

Hon. V. Alfred Gray, Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Local Government in Bahamas, offered high praise in his speech for OUC’s teaching and research capacity and the achievements made by its various laboratories. He gave an overview of the Bahamas, along with BAMSI’s history, mission, and extent of its faculty and students. He said the Bahamas is home to rich marine and agricultural resources.

“Presently, the Bahamian government wishes to promote the sustainable development and utilization of agricultural and marine resources on the basis of ecological and environmental protection,” said the minister, stating his hope that both sides can achieve close collaboration on scientific research and through the exchange of faculty and students for the mutual benefit of both sides.

Hon. Wm. J. Godfrey Eneas, Director of BAMSI and Ambassador to FAO, and Dr. Raveenia Roberts-Hanna, Executive Director of BAMSI, offered an introduction of the institute with suggestions on future exchanges and cooperation between BAMSI and OUC.

Other participants representing OUC were deans of the College of Fisheries, the College of Medicine and Pharmacy, the College of Marine Life Sciences, and the College of Food Science and Engineering respectively, each provided an introduction to their colleges and discussed with the Bahamian delegation specific aspects of their cooperation.

Heads of the Office for the Promotion of Blue Economy, the School of International Education, OUC Press, the International Office, and the Office of Educational Administration, together with faculty members and students from relevant colleges were also present at the meeting.
